From Blank Canvas to Calm Luxury Living Room in Eddington, Cambridge

Written by AZ INTERIORS STUDIO | Nov 9, 2025 9:00:00 AM

When we first walked into this first-floor living room in a townhouse in Eddington, Cambridge, it was the epitome of a blank canvas. White walls, wooden floors, two large windows with doors in the middle of the wall leading to a small balcony ,the space was perfectly functional but completely lacking character, personality, and warmth.

Our goal was to transform it into a elegant, space full of calm and comfort, while still accommodating a busy young family.

Collaboration and the Power of High-Quality Trades

This transformation wasn’t just about picking colours or furniture. It involved a whole team of expert tradespeople: electricians, decorators, made-to-measure furniture installers, and bespoke makers. Every step mattered from carefully planning lighting placement, to installing the designer sofas and armchairs, to the meticulous work on bespoke TV and display units.

It’s often surprising to people how many experts are involved in transforming a single space and why attention to proportion, material, and detail is critical to achieving a flawless result.

Zoning and Flow in a Tricky Space

The room’s long, narrow shape presented a layout challenge. Traffic flow had to be carefully considered to create a comfortable seating area around the TV. We introduced three zones:

TV and seating area with sofas and armchairs on three sides and a central ottoman, creating space to converse, relax, and move freely. Lovely large rug connected that area beautifully.

Desk area for occasional work from home, practical yet stylish, integrated seamlessly without requiring a separate office. Reading and relaxation nook  a BoConcept armchair with footstool, side table, and elegant floor lamp for peaceful alone time. Each zone flows naturally into the next, creating a sense of openness while allowing the room to serve multiple functions.

The “Wow” Factor and Personal Touches

Today, this living room is unrecognisable compared to the blank canvas we started with. It’s an oasis of calm and a highlight of the entire home, full of feel-good energy and understated elegance.

One of our favourite moments - installing three mother-of-pearl chandeliers. We didn’t realise each required a short chain of natural mother-of-pearl discs to be installed individually, a painstaking process that took a full day! Owner of AZ Interiors even had to “bribe” her daughter to help. Patience truly was tested, but the final effect was magical, adding gentle movement and soft sound whenever the breeze flowed through the room.

Other details, like the marble side table, luxurious textures, and bespoke moulding, all contribute to the timeless, elegant feel. High ceilings combined with carefully proportioned panelling make the room feel expansive and sophisticated, enhancing the luxurious ambiance.

Why Interior Design in Eddington, Cambridge is More Than Furniture

This project shows that interior design is about more than picking furniture and colours. It’s about understanding proportions, materials, textures, lighting, and the collaboration of talented experts to create a space that truly works for the homeowners.

Transforming tricky spaces like this living room requires patience, planning, and years of expertise. The result is a room that feels both beautiful and practical.
